DIY Project Complete

So I promised an update, but it won't be a long one...the Hallmark channel is playing in the background and for whatever reason those movies suck me in every time.

Here are the new shelves in the basement.

I absolutely love them.  They were easy, easy, easy and during the Christmas season they will be the perfect place to display our Santas.  I am not sure the room is quite "manly" enough for John's much anticipated "man cave" but I'm working on it.  Maybe I'll change out the candy jars for something a little more masculine...or maybe he will just have to be patient and see what Santa brings Christmas morning!

DIY Shelving and the Hallmark Channel

I need a break.  I need to write about something else. Talking and writing about my grief is good for the soul, but so is a distraction.

This Thanksgiving break has been hard but also a much, much needed break.  We typically pack and travel and go to several dinners but this break was completely different.  I missed the normal hustle and bustle; but I actually enjoyed being in our new home more than I thought I would.  We cleaned and made a peanut butter pie for our dinner Friday but other than those necessary things we just were still.  This season has been so busy and so full that it felt good to sit.  Having a day to rest (while everyone else was running around like crazy having Thanksgiving meals) was perfect.  We enjoyed family time and took naps and ate pot roast.  On Friday, we did have the perfect family Thanksgiving meal after I picked up my parents from the airport.  John and Jane outdid themselves as always and we all ate until we were uncomfortable.  Then we went back for dessert!  The tricky part about Thanksgiving without someone is that you are missing a chair; an actual physical thing.  We were missing a highchair at the table but I forced myself to remember how thankful I am that I have family reminding me I am not alone and that we have the promise of heaven.  There is no greater blessing.

With all that being said, once this evening rolled around my mind needed a distraction.  Everyone left and the hustle and bustle was over.  The only difference today was that there is nothing in the very near future to look forward to.  So I decided to make something.  I wanted to accomplish something and feel proud of it.  And with a secret (and very exciting) gift coming John's way for Christmas I wanted to "prep" the bar for the upcoming holiday (and gift).  So...I made two shelves.  I bought wood, plumbing pipes, spray paint, stain, screws, and a stud finder.  (Side note: If you do not have a stud finder, go get one immediately.)  These suckers are never coming down and it is all thanks to my brilliant dad for letting me know I could purchase a stud finder for $10 at Lowe's.  Who knew?!  He said, "Find the stud, screw those puppies in, and you're good to go."

This is obviously (looking at the picture) not a complete project and I am almost embarrassed about the chaos in the background of this picture but bear with me and I will post an update once these shelves are staged and the rest of the room is clean!  I have to say, this is the easiest and most bang for your buck (the wood was $16 and the pipes were $23) kind of project if you like the look.   I can say that I am proud and my mind was distracted for a bit this evening.  Win, win!  Now, I'm ready for my bed and the Hallmark channel.

On a Lighter Note...

Today was Halloween.  It is not a particularly significant holiday for us but it is the time of year when we do what everyone does; carve pumpkins, dress up, eat lots of candy, and spend time with our family.  This year however is different.  We live each moment realizing that part of our family is missing.

It is hard to live these days without Charlie.  It is impossible to find a normal in all the feelings of grief.  However, we did find a way to include Charlie this year in our Halloween festivities.  John and Macy dressed up as a UK cheerleader and a UK football player.  Johnny's jersey was adorned with a "Number 3."  It is a significant number for us because it represented Charlie, our third baby.  Even on days or holidays as silly as Halloween he is missed but we know he is also with us.

So instead of dwelling on not having a normal Halloween this year (with our whole family out in the cold weather running from house to house), we are living in the moment.  We are here together and the twins are healthy.  They love everything about life these days.  And we are realizing we can celebrate and bring Charlie along with us as Macy and Johnny do what two year olds do!  Everything we do is all so new to them and all so "awesome" (as Johnny would say...).  We are able to look, for this instant, through the eyes of our children, so today we are smiling.  We are enjoying a little bit of cold weather and a lot of candy!

Happy Halloween everyone!

Overwhelming Emotion

Our day yesterday was filled with overwhelming emotion.  There is nothing that could explain the way John and I both felt better than that.

The day started at 4:00 am when Johnny woke up to mentally prepare for his race.  He has always been the kind of person that wakes up early to eat breakfast, watch Sports Center, and be alone with his thoughts before chaos literally erupts in our house around 7:30 or 8:00.  It wasn't out of the ordinary for him to do that, rather very normal.  I stayed in bed but my prayers began immediately as he left my side.  I knew that this marathon was something he had worked so hard for and I wanted him to be able to do his best.  As he finished up his morning routine we walked upstairs to say goodbye.  Right before he left our room he gave me a journal he had kept of every run he had been on in training for the marathon.  I saw him write in the journal throughout the training but I had no idea was those pages really held.  The journal included his mileage for each run, total mileage, pace, and he ended them all with a short letter written to me about how he felt on that particular run.  At the end of the each letter he in some way thanked me for my support by putting the kids to bed, watching them during the day, or staying home during their nap so that he could get those much needed miles in before race day.  The journal was completely unexpected and it is something I will cherish for the rest of my life.  My eyes flooded with tears as I read each entry; it was better than any gift John could (or will) ever give me.  It was evidence that he took time to recognize my small part in his training and thank me for that.

Affirmation.

One of the greatest things a man can do for a women in a marriage (in my opinion).

I obviously couldn't sleep after I read the letters so I sat up and decided to go ahead and get in the shower.  After my shower, I walked back into our bedroom and sat down on the edge of the bed.  I immediately noticed Johnny had left his watch plugged in to the wall.  I cried. Again.  If you are a runner you will know that this isn't just any watch (and if you know my husband you know this is especially true).  This watch keeps pace for him and tells him if he goes out too strong or too slow and gives him the mental strength to keep going when he may want to stop.  He had used it since Christmas when I gave it to him as a gift to start his marathon training.  I knew he would be frustrated without it so my quest to get that watch to him began.  Long story, short, his dad took his watch to him at the two mile mark in Newport where they said the hand off was smooth and the transition/stress was slim to none.  Let's just say after that hour filled with worry my eyes were puffy but my heart was finally calm.  He was going to make it (and he had his watch)!

From my perspective, this next part of the day was actually fairly uneventful.  I got the twins up, fed them breakfast, dressed them in cute (matching of course) outfits, and prepared a bag that was filled with snacks, juice, and other miscellaneous items that would hopefully hold their attention while we waited for John to make it to the finish.  Big John and Jim met me at our house and without much fuss we all made it to Newport where we parked and walked across the bridge to wait near the finish line.  John was hoping to get to the finish in about 3 and a 1/2 hours so we thought they would be fine to be in the stroller while we waited.  The babies were completely content in the stroller for about 45 minutes.  We had received updates throughout the race each time he made it to a certain mark.  He was great at the half way point, slowed down a tad at 19 miles and then we didn't hear or see him for quite some time.  It was then that my pacing and worrying began.  I was not AT ALL worried about his time.  The only reason that ever even crossed my mind is because I know the competitive spirit in my husband is fierce.  I knew that he would be disappointed if he did not get the time he had trained so hard for but I was more worried that he was not there because something was wrong.  Something during the race had not gone as planned.  Awhile longer had passed and finally we heard he was nearing the finish.  When we did finally see him pass us the only way I can describe him and his demeanor was that he looked tired.  He looked done.  He looked like he was in pain and it was all I could do not to stop him right then and there and make him rest.

Later I found out at about mile 18 he started getting cramps in both of this legs.  The extreme cramping haunted him until the end where he finished 26.2 miles at 4 hours and 23 minutes.  He had two precious friends helping at this point in the race, which John will say is the only reason he actually finished the race at all.  Nathan Clinkenbeard and Andrew Evans know the stress and anxiety your body goes through when you run a marathon and they knew he would need someone near the end.  At one point John said they were almost carrying him and talked him into finishing knowing he had come to this race to leave it all on the course.  He definitely left it all out there.  He ran the last two miles by himself and finished as strong as he could.

I was beaming with pride.  The babies were so excited to see "dada" and finally give him a kiss!  We were all so proud and no time or expectation of a certain time could ever change that.

He finished.  It was incredible.

At the end of the race Big John, Jane, Jim, Alicia, Emily, and Brian were all there ready to offer congratulations!  He was really hurting at this point.  The cramps had really taken a toll and his body was tense and stressed.  I was tense and stressed.  After we all shared our excitement with him we figured out a plan to get him home and in an ice bath.  Those legs needed to rest!  This is where Brian came in and truly saved the day with no words, just a helping hand exactly when he needed it.  Brian walked a little behind Johnny as we walked back to the car and when he wasn't feeling his best or he needed to stop he was right there with him and he found paper towels, water, Gatorade, ice, or whatever else he needed.  It was one of those things that only guys can understand about each other.  He certainly didn't want me crying or asking if he was OK.  He just needed someone to know what he needed without talking to him about it and do it!  I feel like God placed the exact right people in Johnny's path that day at the exact right time.

To end (my also overwhelming) day I sat down once I had everyone laying down (for naps/to rest) and decided to take a look at the over 100 pictures Brian took as our "official photographer" for the day.  I turned the camera on ready to relive the day and the words that flashed up on the screen made me sick.

"No Card in Camera"

Why in the world did my camera act like it was taking pictures if there was no card!  We will never get those pictures back but I am sure that neither of us will ever forget the memories we made that day both good and bad.  It was a day that we grew and learned a lot.  It was a much more momumental day that I think either of us expected it to be.  And as small as that day may seem to others, it was a time for us to learn that sometimes our plans are not aligned with God's perfect plan.  We can be humbled when we least expect it and while it's hard to swallow, we know we have grown.  We know that the pain we experience is a blessing and we will be better for it next time.

Flying Pig Marathon

Johnny,

Today is your big day!  I just want you to know that I have prayed over this day since you began training and I have complete faith you will do well.  Your competitive spirit is inspiring and motivating to myself as well as so many others.  It is going to be so exciting to watch you cross the finish line!

I know you always laugh when people say "good luck" because you say luck has nothing to do with it.  You are so right, when you train the way you have trained and you put in the time you have put in to do your best.  So right now, I do not say, "Good luck."  Instead I say "Go get 'em!"  Beat your time and feel proud of what you have accomplished!

Macy, John, and I will be there to see you finish and we will beam with pride as we share your (really fast) time with everyone we know!  What an accomplishment!

We love you and hope for only the best as you finish 26.2 miles!  We love you!!

Love,

Casey

Cribs "R" Us

One of the most exciting things we are working on in our home these days is the nursery!  We recently got our cribs that we ordered from Babies-R-Us.  We didn't wait ONE SINGLE moment to put them together.  Johnny started the chore of building not one but TWO cribs to fill the empty space in our house that has been begging for these pieces.

Here is a little bit of the back story.  Johnny and I drove together to pick up the furniture at Babies-R-Us and found out quickly that our two very large packages were not going to fit in John's mom's car.  I guess {two cribs} are a little bit bigger than we anticipated so we stopped and thought for a minute.  Our only solution...take everything out of the box.  This was a little disappointing because I just knew that meant before we made it home something was going to be scratched.  I wanted everything to be perfect so the entire ordeal made me a little nervous.  Here are a few pictures I snapped before John gave me the evil eye and told me "People do not take pictures of themselves picking up their cribs..."

Once everything was finally inside the car we drove through one of my favorite places for lunch (Chick-fil-A) and then hurried home to get started.  At least Johnny was able to carry in all the pieces by himself (since they were no longer in one big box).  This is a picture of my BIG 'OLE BELLY as Johnny so lovingly refers to it now a days...seeing this picture you know that I didn't do a whole lot of "helping" as much as I did "supervising."  I think we were both OK with that in the long run and everything turned out beautifully, with not one single scratch.

I chose an espresso brown color for both the beds.  I was hesitant about the color because I had always envisioned a bright white nursery for my little ones but I think in the long run this is going to suit them both very well and it ended up making the bedding that we chose look perfect in the room!  Johnny and Scout were worn out once we finished the bed construction but what they didn't know was we had one more errand to run!

I mentioned earlier a dresser...well I had searched and searched for something to use in place of a changing table.  I wanted a long dresser that would have plenty of storage for both babies and eventually be something one of them used in the future.  We looked at several antique stores, garage sales, and curbs (Yes, I said curbs) for something that would work.  We were having absolutely no luck and while I feel great I have my moments of complete meltdown mode when my belly and back are sore to touch and I think I can't possibly move my finger much less find, drag home, clean, and refinish a piece of old furniture.  So we splurged and bought the matching dresser that night.  Johnny called Babies-R-Us and asked if they had the piece in stock.  They said, "Yes!" So back to Babies-R-Us we went!  Seeing it in the room now we know we made the right decision.  It fits the wall by the door perfectly and it looks so good with the two matching cribs.

The furniture is finally in...and now on to MY part...the finishing touches!  We need pictures, curtains, and so many other things to make this nursery the perfect place for the twins to sleep and call home in just a few short weeks.  I have a few things up my sleeve that I will have to tell you more about later.   Here are a few sneak peeks!

4 Year Anniversary

It seems like this year has flown by!  We have experienced some of the most exciting and most frustrating times in our marriage and we thank God for all of the experiences He has blessed us with.  We knew as we experienced the good, the bad, and the ugly, He was building our character and preparing us for a future that will continue to glorify Him.

On our actual anniversary it seemed like we hurried through the day and forgot about how special it really was while making decisions about carpet, updating the kitchen, and picking out baby beds.  Johnny didn't want the day to get away without a special celebration so he added his touch (dinner at Montgomery Inn Boathouse) and I added mine ("$5 Challenge" at Target) that evening away from all of our decisions and mess at the house.

Dinner was amazing!  I love going there because it isn't somewhere we frequent very often so it's a special place to enjoy each other's company.  We would normally exchange gifts after dinner but this year since we are working so hard to get things ready for the babies we decided to save the money and put it towards something for them.  We both knew it was a good decision but we still wanted to spoil each other just a little...Enter "$5 Challenge."

We decided it would be fun to take $5 bills into Target and shop for each other.  The plan was to pick out something under $5 (I thought it would be fun to do it in under 5 minutes but Johnny did not agree...) that the other would LOVE as well as a box of candy to enjoy later during our movie night in.  Here are a couple of pictures from our big adventure.

If you notice our gifts $5 really isn't much at Target but it was a lot of fun and we only spent $10!  That quality time and time spent really digging to find the perfect little something was the perfect way to say "I love you" on our anniversary.

Spring Break

Here are a few pictures of some of our favorite things about spring break.

(Don't get too excited because the real pictures are on my camera which I haven't downloaded yet and there were only two of us, which means only one of us is ever in the picture at a time...)

There were lots of lazy mornings snuggling with Scout.

Johnny ate seafood for almost every meal, including this crazy mess of raw seafood.

I bought a new jacket from one of my favorite restaurants in Sarasota, Captain Curt's (for only $13 I might add...)

We walked right into Captain Curt's where the wait was an hour and a half (I think it was because of my UK shirt).

Kentucky won the National Championship and we cheered them on all the way! Love my team!

Best Husband

If there was ever something I wanted to add in our backyard it was a hammock. I have begged and planned out (on actual) paper where it could go, what it would look like, and how exactly my sweet husband could make it happen. The thing is, if you know my husband at all, you know that he is obsessed with our yard (He loves yard work as much as some people love going on vacation. If you don't believe me, check this out!) and the idea putting something like a hammock in the middle of his yard was less than appealing.

So imagine my surprise when he came home one day and said, "I really want you to have a hammock in the backyard. I know you have really wanted one..."

My eyes lit up! I actually kind of thought he was kidding!! But as you can see from the picture below he started to make my one wish come true in our very own backyard. It wasn't an easy job either...he used concrete and it was dark outside...still so impressed.

Who doesn't want to lay in a hammock and read a book all summer! (And, those books will have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with graduate school because I will finally be done!!) What a good feeling that will be to just relax. All it needs now are a couple screws and my amazingly comfortable looking hammock!

3 Meals in 3 Days

3 meals in 3 days may not be an accomplishment for any of you, but for me this is a HUGE accomplishment. Before Johnny and I got married and started living together I would literally eat cereal and/or ice cream for dinner (unless of course I ate at his parents house...) and I was completely fine with it. Hey, my pyramid wasn't that off balance. I ate a little dairy, a little grain, and a little more dairy. But now that I have a husband I feel like it's pretty important to feed him.

So this week my personal goal was to cook at least three edible meals that Johnny would enjoy!

Tuesday Night (Meal #1): Creamy Cajun Chicken Pasta

2 boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into small chunks
4 ounces linguine, cooked
2 teaspoons cajun seasoning
2 tablespoons butter
1 cup heavy whipping cream
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon dried basil
1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese

Place chicken and cajun seasoning in a bowl and toss to coat. In a large skillet over medium heat, sauté chicken in butter or margarine until chicken is tender, about 5 to 7 minutes. Reduce heat add heavy cream, basil, salt, garlic powder, black pepper and heat through. Pour over hot linguine and toss with Parmesan cheese.

Quote from Johnny: "This is the best dish you've made in a long time." (Remember I don't cook that often but that also doesn't come out my sweet husband's mouth that often either...)

Wednesday Night (Meal #2): Tacos

There was absolutely NOTHING special about my tacos. I even used the seasoning packet from the grocery, but I will say it was a warm meal and it was on the table at dinner time so it counts!

Thursday Night (Meal #3): Crockpot Italian Chicken

4 chicken breasts
1 packet Zesty Italian dressing seasoning
1 8 oz. cream cheese (softened)
2 cans cream of chicken soup

Mix all ingredients together in a crockpot. Cook on low for 4 hours. If sauce is too thick, add a little milk. Serve over rotini pasta.

If you can't tell I love pasta! If there is a way to incorporate it into a meal I normally do! This week was no different. We haven't eaten yet, but this dish is smelling delicious!

Now, if only I could keep this streak going...

Life with Two

This weekend was so much fun and for so many reasons. It was a jam packed weekend (so packed I am updating the blog to avoid the mess that is my house) but it was so worth being completely worn out and not prepared for school, now that all is said and done!

Here is a quick overview of the events we participated in beginning Friday night. We went to the Festival of Lights with my sister and her husband, crashed game night at the Clinkenbeards, cheered on the Cats at Rupp Arena (Correction: I cheered on the Cats while Johnny pouted about UNC), went bowling and had Orange Leaf (yum!), spent the morning at church, and then the afternoon watching the Bengals game.

Overall, we had a great weekend and enjoyed time with so many of our favorite people!

Kari and I after dinner at Quiznos. (You can't tell in this picture but her belly is growing!!)

We finally made it to the zoo and enjoyed very small crowds and perfect weather!

This sweet picture of my rear was supposed to be of the front of us! Thanks Kari!

Philip and Johnny posing near a Gingerbread House! Too funny!
